De Round-Towers of Ronde Torens zijn karakteristiek voor Ierland. Sommige zijn vervallen, andere gerrestaureerd. Soms missen ze de top of staan ze scheef, maar interessant zijn ze bijna altijd.
De meeste ronde torens staan bij kloosters. De klassieke verklaring is dat ze vluchtplaatsen waren voor de monniken. Die torens hadden geen opening of deur op de begane grond. Je moest met een ladder naar binnen. Die werd dan mee naar boven genomen. Maar de Noormannen [of Vikingen] stookten volgens de verhalen een vuurtje onderin zo'n toren.

Round towers are typically Irish. Some are in a very bad shape, others restored. They may lack the top or are bending over to one side. However, they are nearly always interesting to see.

Most round towers are erected near cloisters or abbeys traditionally considered as a refugee place for the monks. They had no ebntrance at ground level. The monks use a stepladder to enter the tower and pulled the stepladder inside. The Vikings made a fire inside the tower.

Heritage of Ireland zegt hierover [overgenomen met toestemming van OPW, the Office of Public Works]:

Clonmacnoise (Offaly)
An early Christian site founded by Saint Ciaran in the 6th century on the banks of the River Shannon. The site includes the ruins of a cathedral, eight churches (10th-13th century), two round towers, three high crosses and a large collection of early Christian grave slabs. The original high crosses and grave slabs are on display in the Visitor Centre. There is an audio-visual show as well as a number of exhibitions. Access for people with disabilities to Visitor Centre.
Please note that this is a very busy site and visitors may experience a delay during the summer.

OPW beheert heel wat historische bezienswaardigheden en parken in Ierland. Kijk maar in een alfabetische lijst of voor [in 2007] gratis te bezoeken parken lees verder... Wel even ter plaatse informeren, de regels veranderen soms nog wel eens in de loop van het jaar.

Natuurlijk is er een Visitors Centre van Heritage Ireland. Daarmee heb je toegang tot het terrein en een kleine tentoonstelling. Maar wat doe je als je er na vijven komt en alles goed op slot zit? Achteraan het terrein is een kerkhof dat nog in gebruik is. Die zijn normaal wel toegankelijk. Het is even een aardig stukje omrijden, maar...
